A tragic multi-vehicle crash in Milam County, Texas, has claimed the life of 68-year-old Amelia Reyes Mendoza of Cameron, leaving several others injured and a community in mourning.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the accident occurred around 9:00 a.m. on May 11 along U.S. Highway 77 near County Road 203 Loop. Authorities said eastbound traffic had come to a stop due to a construction flagger directing vehicles through a TxDOT pavement project in a reduced one-lane work zone.
Investigators reported that a 2018 Dodge SUV, driven by a 40-year-old man from Killeen, approached the stopped traffic but failed to control speed, crashing into the rear of a stationary 2023 Chevrolet SUV driven by Amelia Reyes Mendoza.
The initial impact triggered a chain-reaction collision involving three additional vehicles, resulting in a five-vehicle crash.
Emergency responders transported five individuals to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Temple with injuries ranging from non-incapacitating to severe. Despite medical efforts, Amelia Reyes Mendoza later succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased.
Authorities confirmed that her next of kin have been notified.
The crash remains under active investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety as officials work to determine all contributing factors.
