Authorities in Henderson County are investigating a homicide after an 84-year-old man, Johnny Medford, was found deceased inside his home in the Golden Oaks subdivision in Payne Springs.
According to the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 8:30 p.m. on May 11, 2026, to a residence on Rush Road after reports of a deceased individual inside the home. Deputies, along with investigators from the District Attorney’s Office and the Texas Rangers, arrived to process the scene and begin a joint investigation.
When officers entered the residence, they located Johnny Medford deceased inside the home. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities later obtained a search warrant to collect evidence and further examine the circumstances surrounding his death.
Investigators said that during the course of the inquiry, they identified 63-year-old Ronny Medford, the victim’s son, as a person of interest. Authorities believe he may have been involved in the incident, and an arrest warrant has since been issued for murder.
Officials also reported that Ronny Medford was last seen leaving the residence in a black SUV earlier the same day. Law enforcement agencies are actively working to locate him as the investigation continues.
Justice of the Peace Precinct 2 conducted an inquest at the scene, and an autopsy has been ordered to determine the official cause of death.
As of now, the suspect remains at large, and authorities are urging anyone with information regarding his whereabouts to contact law enforcement immediately.
