Fire Accident, Officer Rogers, Hero Story: Chattanooga Police Officer Bravely Rescues Family of 3 From Burning Apartment in Tennessee
A police officer in Chattanooga, Tennessee is being widely praised for extraordinary bravery after risking his life to save a family trapped inside a burning apartment.
Officer Rogers, of the Chattanooga Police Department, was the first to arrive at the scene of a dangerous apartment fire in Hixson on May 1. Upon arrival, neighbors alerted him that people were still inside the building — a moment that quickly turned into a life-or-death rescue.
Without hesitation, Officer Rogers ran straight into the burning structure, even as flames were visible near the entrance. Inside, he located and rescued Rachel Blaylock’s 4-year-old daughter, Marlowe, carrying her to safety, while the mother followed closely behind with her 10-year-old son, Charles.
Blaylock later recalled the terrifying situation, explaining she had no idea how she would have gotten both children out safely without help. Officer Rogers’ quick thinking and decisive action made all the difference in those critical moments.
Even after ensuring the family had escaped, Rogers prepared to head back inside, believing there could be others still trapped. Body camera footage shows him attempting to fight the fire using an extinguisher — despite the fact that police officers are not trained firefighters.
Thankfully, no injuries were reported, but the fire caused significant damage, leaving the family without their home and most of their belongings. A fundraiser has since been set up to support them as they begin to rebuild.
The Chattanooga Police Department commended Officer Rogers for his courage, emphasizing that while officers may not be trained for firefighting, they are sworn to protect lives — and in this case, he went above and beyond that duty.
This powerful moment serves as a reminder of the risks first responders take every day — and how one person’s bravery can change everything in a matter of seconds.
