Thomas Johnson Death and Obituary: Driver Killed in Devastating Route 50 Crash as Passenger Airlifted—Wood County, West Virginia
The community of Wood County, West Virginia, is mourning the tragic loss of Thomas Johnson of Progress Ridge Road, who died following a serious two-vehicle crash at the intersection of U.S. Route 50 and Progress Ridge Road.
According to the Wood County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to reports of a collision involving a blue Dodge Dakota pickup truck and an eastbound semi-truck. Investigators say the crash occurred when the pickup truck attempted to turn onto Route 50 and was struck by the commercial vehicle.
Thomas Johnson, who was driving the pickup, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash also left passenger Jeremiah Johnson seriously injured. Emergency responders worked to extricate him from the wreckage before he was airlifted by Life Flight helicopter to Charleston Area Medical Center, where he remains under medical care.
News of the fatal accident has left family members, friends, and the wider Wood County community in deep grief. Loved ones are remembering Thomas Johnson as a valued member of the community whose passing has created a lasting void.
The collision led to a prolonged closure of U.S. Route 50 as authorities investigated the scene and crews cleared debris from the roadway. Officials confirmed the highway remained closed for approximately nine hours before reopening.
